Over the last two decades, there has been relentless chipping away at the livelihood of the American middle class. And now, with some 10 million+ Americans “duty free” and out of work as a result of due to COVID-19, the floor has all but fallen out for the millions of Americans already struggling to make a living. Social Security payments will not be enough to placate the 10,000+ boomers who turn 65 every day, despite 70% of them believing it will. And, though women and people of color face even greater obstacles to survival, as a cohort, older Americans’ greatest obstacle is living longer on less.
Important Facts:
16% of worker retirees say that they many have to return to work because they cannot make ends meet.
For about half of seniors, Social Security provides at least 50 percent of their income, and for about 1 in 4 seniors, it provides at least 90 percent of income.
The average Social Security retirement benefit in June 2020 was about $1,514 a month, or about $18,170 a year.
The poverty rate among Black and Latino seniors is over 2.5 times as high as for white seniors.
Our impact goals aim to address economic insecurity in America through an intergenerational lens. We’ll advocate for the country’s most vulnerable through speaking engagements and by providing financial literacy education and resources.
